A ferry leaving Bainbridge Island holds a set number of cars. Everyone else waits for the next sailing. An AI answer works the same way, naming a short list of businesses and moving on.
That limited shelf space is why answer engine optimization, or AEO, now has its own budget line. Pew Research Center's analysis found users clicked a traditional result on about 8% of visits with an AI summary. Without one, the figure was about 15%.
This list covers five Washington agencies that sell AI-search work, from Bothell to Spokane Valley. Each entry explains the method, the price, and the proof. We also flag where claims are self-reported, so you know what to verify.
How we compared these agencies
AEO is a young field, and the sales language runs ahead of the evidence. So we scored each agency on five plain questions:
- Does it describe its method in specific terms?
- Does it say how it measures AI mentions?
- Does it publish prices or contract terms?
- Can you check its proof independently?
- Does it admit its limits?
It helps to know what real AEO work looks like. Our explainer on what AEO actually means covers the mechanics. In short, the work makes your business easy for machines to identify, describe, and trust.
Google's AI features guidance says AI Overviews and AI Mode follow the same eligibility rules as Search. It adds that there are no extra requirements and no special schema to add. Good AEO is mostly good fundamentals, applied with care and measured against real questions.
The five at a glance
Ravenna builds hand-written schema and tracks AI mentions monthly from its Bothell base. Actuate Media adds generative engine optimization (GEO) to a Seattle search and advertising program. Verti Group International, in Redmond, sells a GEO audit and a metric it calls Share of Model.
That One Firm, in University Place, offers a standalone AI visibility audit from $500. August SEO, in Spokane Valley, runs a one-owner practice with no contracts and a free scan. The table below compares them side by side.
| Platform | Starting Price | Best For | Key Differentiator | Free Trial |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ravenna | $750/month | Local businesses wanting AEO and local SEO from one team | Hand-written schema plus monthly AI-mention tracking | Free audit |
| Actuate Media | Flat-rate retainer set per client | Brands that want paid and organic search together | GEO inside a broad ads, SEO, and web program | Not listed |
| Verti Group International | Not published | Law firms, remodelers, and e-commerce shops | GEO Audit and Roadmap with Share of Model tracking | Free website audit |
| That One Firm | $500 one-time audit; plans from $450/month | Owner-operated firms testing AI visibility cheaply | Published prices and an Agent Ready setup | None; audit is paid |
| August SEO | Not published | Spokane-area local businesses | One owner, no contracts, and an AI visibility scan | Free website scan |
1. Ravenna: Hand-written schema and monthly AI-mention tracking
Fair warning: We run Ravenna, so we have a stake in how this entry reads. We held it to the same checklist as the other four.
Ravenna Interactive is a senior Laravel and Statamic consultancy based in Bothell, north of Seattle. It has operated for about 20 years and counts Amazon and Blue Origin among its past clients. Local SEO and AEO are its newest services, sold as monthly retainers.
The AEO work targets visibility in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It sits beside local SEO for plumbers, electricians, roofers, and other trades in Seattle, Everett, Tacoma, and Spokane. Ravenna's own site, ravennainteractive.com, serves as the proof of concept.
How the AEO work runs
The work starts with an AI visibility audit across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Engineers then hand-write structured data and shape pages so answers are easy to extract. The team also builds citations, reviews, and brand mentions, adds an llms.txt file, and monitors AI mentions each month.
Because developers do the work, site fixes ship without a handoff. Ravenna also publishes two free Statamic addons. One generates llms.txt files, and the other tracks AI bot visits.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Developers and strategists work as one team, so technical fixes do not wait in another vendor's queue.
- The monthly range is published, and terms are month to month.
- Free tools show hands-on work with AI crawlers, not only slide decks.
Limits
- A team of two to nine people limits how many projects run in parallel.
- AEO is a newer service, so public AEO case results are thin.
- As noted above, Google says no special schema is required. Judge the schema work by clarity, not magic.
Cost and contract terms
AEO retainers run $750 to $2,500 a month, depending on market competitiveness and the number of locations. Terms are month to month, with no long-term contract. Work is scoped after a free audit.
The service is often bundled with local SEO at a combined rate. Ask for the bundle quote and the stand-alone quote side by side. That shows what each piece costs.
Clients and credibility
Ravenna lists Amazon, Blue Origin, Bank of Hawaii, and Sun Mountain Lodge among its clients. The Sun Mountain Lodge rebuild lifted its Lighthouse speed score to 91 from the 60s, and monthly SEO gains followed. Clutch shows four verified reviews averaging 4.9.
None of those results are AEO-specific. Ask to see a sample audit before you commit.
2. Actuate Media: SEO and GEO beside paid search
Actuate Media is a Seattle agency with additional offices in Tampa and Orlando. It runs Google Ads, SEO, and web design. Its SEO program includes generative engine optimization, and the site cites 25-plus years of digital advertising experience on staff.
How the AEO work runs
The SEO and GEO program covers technical SEO, content strategy, and visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. The page also mentions AI Overview visibility. It does not use the term AEO.
Ads, SEO, and web design sit under one roof. That lets one team connect paid results to organic and AI visibility. It suits a business that already buys search ads and wants one plan.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Breadth is the draw, with ads, SEO, and builds in WordPress, Shopify, Astro, Next.js, and Laravel.
- There are no long-term contracts, and setup fees are $0.
Limits
- GEO is one part of a broad program, not a standalone specialty.
- The site does not describe an AEO method or how AI mentions are measured.
- Pricing for SEO and GEO is not published.
Cost and contract terms
Ad management costs 20% of spend with a $500 monthly minimum, or a flat-rate retainer set per client. The agency describes its arrangements as month to month. Website builds start at $999 for WordPress, $2,499 for Shopify, and $4,999 for Astro and Next.js.
SEO and GEO pricing needs a quote. Ask what the retainer includes before you compare it with narrower specialists.
Clients and credibility
Actuate holds Google Premier Partner status, which it describes as the top 3% nationwide for Google Ads. It also lists certifications in Microsoft Ads, Meta Blueprint, and SEMrush. The site says the average client has stayed four-plus years.
Those figures are company-reported, and the page shows no review count. Check Google reviews directly before you sign.
3. Verti Group International: GEO audits from a Redmond incumbent
Verti Group International is headquartered in Redmond and says it has done SEO since 2008. It serves Seattle, Bellevue, and the wider state. Its site now leads with generative engine optimization for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews.
The firm also sells local SEO, e-commerce SEO, WordPress work, video, social media, PPC, and law firm SEO. That mix suits a business wanting AI visibility without dropping classic search. It also means GEO shares the stage with other services.
How the AEO work runs
Verti lists a GEO Audit and Roadmap as a named service. It tracks Google results and AI answer retrieval by platform, query, and date. It also records AI recommendations, citations, mentions, and source attribution.
The firm calls its headline metric Share of Model. It also uses a HubSpot AEO platform to report brand visibility, share of voice, and citation performance. Its frameworks, Vertical Intelligence and Eagle Path, shape how the work is deployed.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Measurement language is specific, with tracking by platform, query, and date.
- The firm says it works with one business per market niche per territory.
- It says it caps its roster at about 20 to 30 clients, which may protect attention.
Limits
- Pricing and contract terms are not published.
- The page does not describe what the GEO audit includes.
- Branded frameworks can blur the deliverables. Ask for a plain written list.
Cost and contract terms
Verti invites visitors to request a proposal and offers a free strategic website audit through its contact page. Expect a quote based on market, competition, and scope. No contract terms appear on the site.
Ask for the term length, the cancellation rules, and the reporting schedule in writing. Also ask who owns the tracking dashboards if you leave.
Clients and credibility
The site reports that First Finishers, an Olympia remodeler, ranked number two organically for "Olympia remodeling contractors" in September 2026. Testimonials come from Eagle Pest Eliminators, Scott Gorski Aviation Aerobatics, and Natural Options Aromatherapy. The firm also shows a GoodFirms "Top Generative AI" badge.
Verti claims an A+ Better Business Bureau rating with zero complaints. That claim is self-reported, so confirm it on BBB.org. Treat the ranking table on its site the same way.
4. That One Firm: A $500 audit from University Place
That One Firm is a husband-and-wife agency in University Place, just west of Tacoma. It serves South Sound businesses and takes clients nationwide when the fit is right. It is the only firm on this list that sells a standalone AI audit at a published price.
How the AEO work runs
The AI Visibility Audit is a one-time snapshot. It shows how AI assistants describe your business, which competitors they recommend instead, and what to fix first. The firm lists a three to five business day turnaround, and its tool is called AIVIS.
A second service, Agent Ready, prepares a site for AI agents. It covers clear copy, an llms.txt file, and forms agents can use to request quotes or book calls. The firm says it applies this to its own site first.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Prices are published, which is rare in this market.
- The page suggests starting with the audit and moving to a monthly plan only if the numbers justify it.
Limits
- The audit is a diagnosis, so someone still has to carry out the fixes.
- The page shows no testimonials, ratings, or measured AI results.
- The scope is narrow, so it is not a full marketing partner.
Cost and contract terms
The audit starts at $500. The Lite plan runs $450 to $750 a month, month to month. The Growth plan runs $1,750 to $2,750 a month and covers visibility plus lead care.
Those are the lowest published entry prices on this list. They make the audit a cheap way to test whether AI visibility is worth a larger budget.
Clients and credibility
Its portfolio links include Our Garden Hub, a House of Cannabis multisite redesign, and InspectorOS. Those are work samples, not verified outcomes. The page claims no measured results.
Ask for references from owner-operated businesses before you commit to a retainer. A short audit-first engagement lets you test the firm cheaply.
5. August SEO: A one-owner Spokane Valley specialist
August SEO is a Spokane Valley practice led by Kevin August, who cites more than 21 years of experience. It serves Spokane and Spokane Valley. A separate practice, Spokane AI Consulting, handles broader AI work for local businesses.
How the AEO work runs
The firm sells AI search optimization to help local businesses get named in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. It says this work overlaps with local SEO, so clients pay for it once. An in-house system called AugAI checks what AI tools say about a business.
A free live website scan requires no email. The firm says first results usually appear in 60 to 90 days. Competitive positions often take four to six months.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- The person you speak with is the person doing the work.
- The site advertises no contracts and no lock-ins, and clients keep their site, domain, accounts, and content.
- It admits that rankings may decline over time after the work ends.
Limits
- A one-owner practice has limited capacity.
- Pricing is not listed, and the service area is Spokane and Spokane Valley.
- Case results are self-reported.
Cost and contract terms
August SEO does not publish prices, so request a written scope after the free scan. Terms are month to month with no lock-in. Confirm what the monthly fee covers before you agree to the first round of fixes.
Clients and credibility
Per the site, Ferrante's Cafe grew organic sessions from 0 to 1,109 and ranks first for "Italian Food Spokane." H&H Molds grew from 135 to 400 sessions, and Cycrest Systems from 106 to 929. All of those figures are self-reported.
The firm holds a 4.8-star rating from 16 Google reviews. Reviewers describe Kevin August as communicative, organized, and results-driven.
Questions to ask before you hire
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO ranks pages in a list of results. AEO aims to get your business named inside the answer itself. The groundwork overlaps heavily, including accurate listings, clear pages, and trusted third-party mentions.
Does schema markup guarantee AI citations?
No. Google says no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data still helps machines read your business facts, as long as it matches the visible page.
Do AI tools need access to my site?
Yes. OpenAI's crawler documentation says to allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt file to appear in ChatGPT search results. GPTBot, which relates to model training, is a separate setting. Ask any agency to check your robots.txt on day one.
Do small local businesses need AEO?
Often yes, because assistants now answer "who should I call" questions directly. Our AEO guide for local businesses explains where to start. For many owners, accurate listings and recent reviews come first.
Can content alone get me cited?
Content helps, but it is rarely enough by itself. Pages must be clear, crawlable, and backed by outside mentions. Our post on writing content for AI search shows how to structure pages for both Google and AI answers.
How should I measure AEO results?
Pick a fixed set of questions your customers ask. Record whether your business is named, how it is described, and which sources are cited. Repeat monthly, and pair those results with calls and leads.
How long does AEO take?
Agencies quote anywhere from several weeks to six months. August SEO says first results usually appear in 60 to 90 days. Be skeptical of any promise of results in two weeks.
So which agency should you pick?
Pick Ravenna if you want AEO and local SEO from developers who also fix the website. Pick Actuate Media if you already buy search ads and want one team across paid and organic. Pick Verti Group International if you want named GEO frameworks and a capped client roster.
Pick That One Firm if you want to test AI visibility cheaply before committing to a retainer. Pick August SEO if you run a Spokane-area business and want the owner on your account. Whichever you choose, ask for a written scope and a before-and-after example.
AI answers have room for only a few names. If you want yours to be one of them, Ravenna offers a free AI visibility audit with no long-term contract. Book a call and see how ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity describe your business today.
